Reindeer

Reindeer Name: Reindeer
Scientific Name: Rangifer tarandus

Basic Information:
Reindeer come from the family Cervidae. These animals are sometimes called "caribou," depending on subspecies and the region in which they are found. Reindeer are found across northern Eurasia as well as Canada, Alaska, and the western fringes of Greenland. Adults grow to around 1m high at the shoulder. Females can weigh around 90 kg at their heaviest and males around 130 kg at their heaviest. Reindeer are the only deer species in which all members: males, females, and calves, grow antlers. These antlers are shed and regrown every year, starting at different times for each member of the species.

Habitat Information:
Tundra - One of our smaller exhibits, the tundra habitat at Windaroo Zoo offers a chance for our visitors, who wouldn't otherwise have a chance to witness the natural beauty of this environment, to see a small number of the animals found in the polar regions of the globe where temperatures often drop below 0 degrees.

Reindeers at Windaroo:
Reindeer can be seen year round in the tundra habitat at Windaroo Zoo. Normally migratory animals, Windaroo's Reindeer are tame and are provided with climate controlled relief facilities to ensure proper living conditions year-round.
