Oryx (Gemsbok) Name: Oryx (Gemsbok)
Scientific Name: Oryx Gazella

Basic Information:
The Oryx comes from the family Bovidae. The species of Oryx found at Windaroo Zoo are Oryx Gazella with both northern and southern subspecies groups. The northern Gemsboks have comparatively shorter horns and less rounded ears. Both groups have long, thick horns with the females curving slightly. Male Gemsboks have been observed in nature using their horns as defense against lions, sometimes goring them to death. Gemsboks typically live in extremely arid climates and take in essential water through their food. Adults grow to an average height of 1.2 m at the shoulder and weigh around 200 kg.

Scrubland/Heathland - Australian natives will recognize a wide variety of local animals in this area of the zoo, but can also expect to see some other animals from around the world.
