Lion

African Lion Name: African Lion
Scientific Name: Panthera leo

Basic Information:
Lions are from the family Felidae. Only one of four species from this family of big cats, they can be found in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Fully grown, a lion may be over 250 kg (almost 600 lbs) but is still smaller than a full grown tiger. Even though you see lions in many zoos, they are a critically endangered species in many parts of the world. Lions live between 10 to 14 years in the wild and are usually found in groups called prides. These social units are made up of many related females, younger lions, and a few dominant males. In prides, the females hunt as a group. You can recognize the male lion by his mane.

Habitat Information:
Savanna - Characterized by sparse tree cover, savanna environments are most commonly found in Africa. In our savanna habitat, visitors can see the animals one would normally expect, such as lions, hippopotami, and elephants, as well as less well-known but no less important animals, such as insects and arachnids.

Lions at Windaroo:
You can find lions in our savannah habitat area. You will also find other animals from grasslands in Africa and Asia.
