Kiwi
Name: KiwiScientific Name: Apteryx haastii
Basic Information:
From our partner zoo in New Zealand, we have received several breeding pairs of Kiwis. These small birds are about the size of a chicken but cannot fly. They hunt for insects and grubs along the forest floor at night. As you know, the kiwi is the national bird of New Zealand.
Unfortunately, mush of the kiwi habitat has been taken over my foreign species. These nocturnal birds use a keen sense of smell to find insects seeds and worms. Our kiwis are made of three pair bonds. They will live their entire lives together here at Windaroo and hopefully make a few baby Kiwis along the way.
Kiwis are distantly related to Australia's Emu.
Habitat Information:
Scrubland/Heathland - Australian natives will recognize a wide variety of local animals in this area of the zoo, but can also expect to see some other animals from around the world.
Kiwis at Windaroo:
We keep our kiwis in a special nocturnal enclosure so that they are active during visiting hours. You will also find bats and other nocturnal species in the facility.
