Dhole

Dhole Name: Dhole
Scientific Name: Cuon Alpinus

Basic Information:
The Dhole is part of the family Canidae. This animal is closely related to the modern wolf but displays many traits that are unique to the species. Foremost, the Dhole is a highly adaptable animal, capable of living in both freezing and tropical conditions (the Dhole has been recorded in nearly all types of habitats except for desert conditions). Adults typically grow to a size of 1 m and weigh anywhere from 10 to 22 kg depending on region and gender. Dholes are social animals, forming packs with complex social hierarchies and breeding patterns. They hunt cooperatively and it is not uncommon that they will take down animals 20 times their own weight.

Habitat Information:
Prairie and Steppe - Generally distinguished by the type of plants covering the ground, prairie habitats have taller grasses while steppe habitats have shorter grass. Both habitats have a wide variety of plants and animals, as well as insects, to be seen at Windaroo Zoo.
