Basic Information:
This type of crane can be found throughout Queensland and along the eastern coast of Australia. They can grow to be very large, up to 1.6 m in length and weigh up to 7.3 kg. Sarus Cranes have a grey body with red and black coloring on their heads. These birds are social creatures and typically travel in packs of 2-5. The wetlands and coastlines provide a wide variety of foods for the crane to choose from. Its diet includes: small fish, insects, berries, plants, crustaceans, seeds and small invertebrates. The crane's long bill help it pick food form the sandy shore line and muddy bottoms of lakes and streams. It's also used for picking insects form dead trees and hard to reach places.
