Brown Bear
Name: Syrian Brown BearScientific Name: Ursus arctos syriacus
Basic Information:
The Syrian Brown Bear is the smallest subspecies of Brown Bear. They are omnivorous, eating almost any type of food, including meat, grass, and fruits. The Syrian Brown Bear is a vulnerable species because their numbers are declining due to habitat destruction, poaching, and fragmentation of population. Unless the circumstances threatening its survival and reproduction improve, it will likely transition into an endangered species.
Bears are very powerful, even if considered pound for pound; a large specimen can break a neck or spine of a fully grown buffalo with a single blow. In spite of their size, some have been clocked at speeds in excess of 56 km/h (35 mph). Along with their strength and deceptive speed, brown bears are legendary for their stamina. They are capable of running at full speed for miles at a time without stopping.
